About the Department:


Microbiology is relatively new in Biology though it was practiced as an art since ages. The Department of Microbiology was established in 1974 as an independent university department recognised by the UGC at Osmania University, Hyderabad has become the first ever in entire south India among southern universities to offer M.Sc Microbiology. A separate building was constructed for the department of microbiology in the year 1982.

The department offers 2 yearM.Sc course and PhD research degrees in Microbiology. The initial intake of students into M.Sc course was 6 in 1974 which is gradually increased to 24 (including supernumerary) in the year 2007, and increased 33 by the year 2016. Students are admitted through entrance exam conducted by the university. International students from countries like Iraq, Iran, Ethiopia, Somalia, Nigiria, Jordan, Yemen, UAE, Afganisthan, Uganda and Nepal are some of our alumini. The department has made significant contributions in terms of academic standards as evidenced by placement of students and research funding to the faculty. The alumni of this department are placed in highest positions in various international and nationalresearch institutes, pharma companies, medical industries and universities some of such institutes are NIH USA, Okhlohma University USA, Monsanto USA, NIN, CCMB, IICT, CPCB, Reddy labs, Shantha Biotech, CDFD, AIIMS, DRDO, Biological E, Unisankyo, Indian Immunologicals and etc. The faculty, scholars, alumni of this department have published more than 3000 research papers and wrote several books and book chapters.

Department has organized six international and 12 national seminars and several other workshops, also organized blood donation camps for 4 times apart from organizing health awareness programs such as Anthrax awareness AIDS awareness. The senior faculty of the department delivered several guest lecturers and invited talks at various Universities and Institutes. The faculty members of the department have received several national and state level.The main area of research of the department is microbial fermentations, strain improvements, biomass utilization, microbial enzymes, probiotics, antibiotics, fuel and chemicals, diagnostics, Medical Microbiology, biological mutagenesis etc.
