About the Department:

Geophysics is the study of the earth by physical methods. Teaching and research in Geophysics in the Osmania University started in 1963, with the introduction of one year M.Sc. (Tech.)course in Applied Geology (Geophysics) for M.Sc. (Geology) candidates.

The full-fledged three year M.Sc. (Tech) course in Geophysics was introduced in 1965 and an independent Department of Geophysics was created in 1967.An advanced level teaching and research centre, Centre of Exploration Geophysics was established in 1969 under the Indo-Soviet bilateral agreement, which functioned in collaboration with the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute (MGPI) till 1979. The Department has been recognized and financed under the DRS and COSIST programmes of UGC during. 1986-97 and DRS Phase-III was in operation during 1997-2002. Currently the Centre is supported financially by DSA(SAP) from UGC for research activities and FIST (Funding for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure in Universities and Higher Education Institutions) from DST, for infrastructure to augment the existing facilities. With effect from 2001-2002, the Geophysics P.G. Course has been converted to 2 years M.Sc. course.
