The Department of Chemistry, Osmania University is established in 1918. The Department is nodal center for various UG and PG programmes. A total of more than 200 UG Colleges offering Chemistry as optional are affiliated to the Department of Chemistry, Osmania University. The main Department is located in University College of Science and is allied with four Constituent Colleges viz; Nizam College, Osmania University College for Women, University College of Science, Saifabad PG College PG College Secunderabad, under its purview offering UG and PG programmes in Chemistry. Apart from Constituent Colleges there are 4 PG Colleges at respective towns, viz; PG College- Mirzapur, PG College-Siddipet, Osmania University PG College -Narsapur and Osmania University PG College -Jogipet. It is also parent Department to M.Sc. Forensic Sciences which was introduced in 2001 in separate building at the proximity of Department of Chemistry, University College of Science.

The Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) is implemented for undergraduate courses. The syllabus for discipline specific courses of Chemistry optional in various B.Sc. courses was framed as per the guidelines of University Grants Commission. Apart from offering Chemistry as one of the Optional Courses, Skill Enhancement and Generic Courses also have been offered on choice based system.

The various PG programmes offered under the domain of Department of Chemistry are M.Sc. Inorganic Chemistry, M.Sc. Organic Chemistry, M.Sc. Physical Chemistry, M.Sc. Physical - Organic Chemistry, M.Sc. Analytical Chemistry, M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry, M.Sc. Chemistry (Pharmaco Informatics), M.Sc. Five years Integrated Chemistry Programme. The choice based credit system is adopted for all PG courses and various electives were offered to facilitate students’ choice system.

The Department is research centre since 1952 ?onwards catering its services to support research activity in respective areas under pioneered supervisors. The Department is statutory body for research centers such as Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Hyderabad etc .

The examination evaluation system advocated is as per the prescribed guidelines of UGC, for both UG and PG Programmes. The modalities for Ph.D programme, its course work and various steps involved in evaluation process for award of Ph.D Degree are executed in accordance of guidelines directed by UGC.
