About Osmania University

Osmania University established in 1918, is the seventh oldest in the Country, third oldest in South India and the first in the princely state of Hyderabad. Hyderabad is 400 + years old state capital and the second largest metro cities in the country known as Pearl City of India. The establishment of Osmania University symbolizes a renaissance in the Indian Educational System and has shown a remarkable resilience throughout its existence. The University is instrumental in propagation of Higher Education to cater to the needs of community in the region over nine decades and has grown into one of the major Universities of India. It has a vast sprawling green campus of 500 hectares set in picturesque and idyllic surroundings. It owns number of buildings of great architectural elegance and variety to enhance the beauty of the campus. The University is an autonomous institution created through an act of legislature and most part of funding is from the State Government. The University holds the flagship for Higher Education of Government of Andhra Pradesh and has played a key role in planning, initiating and implementation of various developmental programs.

The University is surrounded by nine National Laboratories, which are recognized by Osmania University as Centers for Advanced Research in the fields of Science and Technology in addition to Arts and Social Science Research Centers. The availability of modern amenities and facilities were because of the establishment of various Centers of Excellence in the fields of Social Sciences, Sciences, Engineering and Technology to conduct the research of a high order in all branches of knowledge. This was aimed at developing human resources for the formulation, implementation and evaluation of public policies and community development programs to gain self reliance and to improve the quality of life of impoverished millions of the country in a global society, leading it into an internationally acclaimed University.

The alumni of the University have distinguished themselves in several walks of life. Some of them became outstanding figures in public life such as Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, Ministers, Parliamentarians, Legislators, Eminent scholars, Educationists, Diplomats, Administrators, Jurists, Lawyers, Doctors, Engineers, Scientists, Writers, Sportsmen and men of Arts & Culture. Some of them emerged as leading industrialists and CEO’s of corporate sector. Quite a few of them have won International acclaim for good work and have contributed to the name and fame of the country abroad.

The University is aware of its role and needs to update the curriculum, faculty training, governance and management to keep themselves abreast of the changes and current developments in the global educational arena. Accordingly the University has geared up itself to prepare a document for Development Plan.
