About the Department:


M. Sc. (Forensic Science) is an interdisciplinary programme, being offered on self- financing basis. It is an unique course with the multidisciplinary studies involving core subjects of pure and applied sciences like Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Botany, Zoology, Genetics, Microbiology, Geology and Computer Science, etc. and peripheral subjects like Medicine, Engineering, Instrumentation, Law, Psychology, Statistics, Communication Skills and Management etc. .

The M. Sc. (Forensic Science) course was started, with Chemistry Dept. OU as nodal Dept., in the academic year 2000-2001 with the active support of A. P. State Forensic Science Laboratory through a MOU. Later the Dept. of Forensic Science, MHA, Govt. of India also signed a MOU with OU in 2006 to support this course..

Both the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Hyderabad and AP State Forensic Science Laboratory, Hyderabad provided valuable help through necessary guidance and attachments of the students to their respective laboratories for exposure. Other institutions in the city like IICT, CCMB, CDFD, CDTS etc. collaborate to provide a helping hand to the course. Crime investigation has become a scientific endeavor. The criminal justice system discourages the use of third degree methods and promotes the scientific methods of Forensic Science in the investigative process. The role of forensic scientist in the criminal justice system is to give accurate and objective information about the events that might have taken place at the scene of crime by utilizing advanced M. Dr. T. R. Baggi, former Director, Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Hyderabad is the Founder Academic Coordinator of the course. Administrative support is being provided by the Coordinator, Prof. D. Ashok and the Chairperson Board of Studies (Forensic Science) Prof. L. N. Sharada, , both from the Chemistry Dept. OU. Apart from the Academic Coordinator (Forensic Science) and two regular Asst. Professors (Forensic Science), Kum. T. Sowmyya and Kum. K. Rama (who joined on Sept 6, 2013), lectures are delivered by Guest Faculty drawn from several Depts. of OU, CFSL, APFSL, IICT, CCMB and Osmania Medical College etc.National/International meetings. Main research interests are in the area of Forensic Science, Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology.
