The UGC, in pursuance of the NEP 1986, launched the UGC Academic Staff College scheme for promoting quality in higher education.  In this endeavour, 51 UGC – Academic staff Colleges were established in different Universities all over India, fully funded by the UGC.

The UGC- Academic Staff Colleges are mainly entrusted with the responsibility of organizing in-service training programmes.  These include Orientation courses and Refresher courses. The main objective of Orientation courses are to inculcate in the young lectures self-reliance and make them aware of social and economic  concerns of Indian society and the role of education in dealing with them.  The thrust of Refresher Course is to help teachers acquire knowledge about the latest developments in the field and encourage them to undertake quality research.

The UGC ASC at Osmania University was established in 1987.  So  far 48 Orientation and 160 Refresher Courses have been organized. During 2005-2006, four orientation courses and 13 Refresher courses were organized

The objectives of the Academic Staff College are to enable lectures to

Þ    Understand the significance of education in general, and higher education in

      particular,  in the global and Indian contexts

Þ    Understand  the linkages between education and socio-economic and cultural 

      development with particular reference to the Indian polity where democracy,

      secularism   and social equity are the basic tenants of society .

Þ   Acquire and improve basic skills of teaching at the college/university  and to perceive the role of teachers in the total system

Þ   Utilize opportunities for development of personality, initiative and creativity, and promote computer literacy as well as Internet knowledge.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ATTENDING ORIENTATION & REFRESHER COURSES

Lecturers working on a regular basis in UGC / State scales.

Temporary / Contract  teachers who have been teaching for at least two academic  sessions in an institution which is affiliated to a University for at least two years.

Note: The schedule is subject to change.

The Orientation programmes / Refresher Courses will also have Information Technology-based contents for about a week.

A Demand Draft for Rs. 500/- in favour of the Director , UGC-ASC, OU, Should be paid as Registration Fee for the Course, which is non-refundable

Certification of Participants:

The UGC – ASC will  issue  a Certificate of  Participation to participants on the Successful completion the programme
