Ph.D. Admission 

Guidelines

  

General :

    

Osmania University shall confer the ‘Degree of Doctor of Philosophy’ (Ph.D.) in ten faculties: Arts, Social Sciences, Science, Commerce, Management, Law, Engineering, Technology, Educationand Oriental Languages. The admission into Ph.D. programme is in accord with the provisions and guidelines laid down herein.

    

Eligibility :

   

1. An international student seeking admission into Ph.D. must have passed

(a) a Post-Graduate degree with a minimum of 55% marks and

(b) published two research papers in professional National/International journals.

The exemption of research papers shall be given only, if the candidate is sponsored by the ICCR/MHRD/Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India.


2. If the foreign student is possessing Indian degree, he has to go back to his home country and get a fresh visa to join the M.Phil/Ph.D. programme.


3. All the foreign students who are admitted into Ph.D. programme under self finance have to pay the prescribed fee of two years in advance at the time of admission and the remaining fee at the end of every year in advance for the next year. Fee will be refunded if any after adjustment of all the dues.
 

 

Requirements of Enclosures to Application :

   

The following documents are to be enclosed along with the application.

• Two certified copies of the marks sheet of the PG qualifying examination (certified translated version in English)
• Two certified copies of the PG Degree Certificate of the qualifying examination (certified translated version in English)
• A copy of the syllabus/curriculum of their PG/M.Phil. Degree (certified translated version in English)
• Two copies of Research Publications
• Two copies of the passport
• A non-refundable Demand Draft towards registration fee in favour of the ‘Director, UFRO, Osmania University, Hyderabad’ for Indian Rupees equivalent to : US $ 300 (for M.Phil./Ph.D. programmes)

No Objection Certificate :

Admission Procedure

 

Admissions to Ph.D. programme are made during any time of the year.  Since the foreign students seeking admission from all over the globe would have completed their P G Degrees at different time during the year, it is not possible to fix a specific deadline for application.  The following guidelines are followed for the admission of foreign students into Ph.D. programme.

  • As and when the applications are received at UFRO, they will be processed for admission and the 'Provisional Admission Letters' will be issued to the students.

  • Later on the foreign students from self-financing category will have to approach the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India for obtaining the 'No Objection Certificate'.  There is a specific proforma to be filled - in and submitted in six sets to the MHRD.

  • Without the NOC from MHRD, no foreign student will be able to apply for and get the required 'Research Visa' from the respective Embassy / Consulate of India, which is mandatory for any university in order to admit the student into Ph.D. programme.

  • When the student reports at UFRO with a valid 'Research Visa', admission process will be initiated and a final letter of admission addressed to the Dean of the Faculty will be issued.  The same will be intimated to the college principal and the concerned Head of the Department.

  • The foreign students shall report to the Dean of the Faculty with the letter of admission and join the Ph.D. Programme.

  • The Dean shall admit the scholar and initiate the process of identifying the research guide / supervisor in consultation with or by issuing a circular to the Principal of the college, Head and the research supervisors of the concerned department.

  • Joining Report of the foreign scholar shall be intimated to the principal of the college, Head of the Department, Chairman, Board of Studies concerned, the Director, UFRO and the Registrar (Acad).

  • The date of reporting of the foreign student to the Dean shall be the date of joining into the programme for all purposes.

  • The annual tuition fee payable is accounted from the above date of joining.

  • The foreign scholar shall finalize the topic of research in consultation with the research supervisor and communicate the synopsis of the project to be undertaken to the Dean of the Faculty.

  • The Dean shall finalize the topic of research and supervisor and issue orders marking a copy to the Principal, Head, Chairman, Board of Studies, COE, Registrar (Acad) and the Director, UFRO immediately.

The candidates are requested to note that the duration of the course, the Pre-Ph.D. Examination, the syllabus, seminars, thesis submission procedure and evaluation are same as specified in the Ph.D. Regulations 2000' of Osmania University.  However, some of the salient features are briefly outlined below for the benefit of foreign.

 

Tenure of the Programme :

   

The period of research programme for full-time foreign scholars is normally three years from the date of their joining the programme.  In case the programme is incomplete, extension for a period of one more year shall be granted on application to the Dean of the Faculty through the Director, UFRO.  The request for any such extension must be made at least two months prior to the expiry of three-year deadline.  Failure to apply for extension at least two months prior to the expiry of the deadline will lead to the cancellation of admission.  Any further extension beyond four years, for a maximum period of year, shall have to be granted by the University. The request for the same be forwarded through the Director, UFRO.  The registration of a foreign scholar shall stand cancelled after the expiry of the extension period.

   

Progress Report :

   

A quarterly progress on the research work carried out is to be submitted to the Dean of the Faculty through proper channel.  A copy of the progress report should also be sent to the Director, UFRO.

   

Part-Time Research :

   

There is no provision for part-time research in the University for foreign students. All candidates applying for research programmes will be admitted for full-time research.

Pre-Ph.D. Examination :

   

The foreign student is allowed to appear for the next immediate pre-Ph.D. Examination after the date of joining in the Department.  Failing to clear the examination in two successive attempts will disqualify the foreign students from pursuing further research and their admission stands cancelled.  The medium of Examination is English only.

   

Syllabus :

   

The syllabus for the Pre-Ph.D. Examination is same as for the local students and the details on that can be had from the respective Departments.

   

Mode of Examination :

   

The candidate will have to appear for the following two papers and qualify as per the rules of University :

Paper I : Research Methodology

Paper II : Broad Field of Research

   

General Conditions & Other Information :

   

The conditions are as applicable to the local students (Please see the 'Ph.D. Regulations 2000' of Osmania University for local students).

   

Seminar Lectures :

The number and nature of the seminar to be presented are same and as applicable to the local students (Please see the 'Ph.D. Regulations 2000' of Osmania University for local students).

   

Final Submission of Thesis :

   

As soon as the work is completed, the entire work has to be presented in the form of a write-up only in English, called the thesis, and submitted to the Controller of Examinations along with the prescribed application form.  The guidelines laid down in the 'Ph.D. Regulations 2000' of Osmania University, shall be adhered to while preparing the thesis.  Also, at the time of submitting the thesis, the tuition fee and any other payments have to be cleared and a 'No Dues' certificate from the Director, UFRO has to be submitted to the COE.

   

Adjudication of the Thesis

    

Evaluation of the Thesis

  • The Chairman, BOS in the Department, in consultation with the Research Supervisor, gives a panel of 12 Examiners.

  •  The adjudication or evaluation of the thesis will be done independently by three examiners ( referees)  appointed by the University.

  • The final recommendation of the examiners has to be unequivocal and should state :

1. The thesis be accepted for the award of Ph.D. Degree.

            Or

2.    The thesis be revised and resubmitted.

            Or

3.The thesis be rejected.

Adjudication Report :

  • If all the three examiners concur that the thesis is acceptable as it is, the foreign scholar shall be permitted to take the viva-voce examination.

  • If any of the three examiners suggests a revision, the thesis shall be revised accordingly and resubmitted for approval by the same examiner.

  • If all the three examiners reject the thesis, the registration of the foreign scholar stands cancelled.

  • The Vice-Chancellor shall be the final authority on all matters pertaining to the adjudication and the award of Ph.D. degree to the foreign scholar.

    

Viva-Voce Examination :

   The procedures are as applicable to the local students (Please see the 'Ph.D. Regulations 2000' of Osmania University).
