Medals /Prizes

• Miss. Jayashree Kannan Memorial gold medal to be awarded annually to M.Sc. Biochemistry student for securing highest marks.

4.  Facilities Available

• A library with 3,500 books encompassing fundamental biochemistry and all its branches of modern biology viz., Molecular biology, Cell biology, Immunology, Biotechnology are available. There are two labs for conducting M.Sc. practicals with one  instrumentation room. Ten research laboratories established by faculty members largely with funds obtained from extramural agencies for conducting Ph.D., postdoctoral and consultancy research projects. All the research labs are equipped with computers connected by LAN with internet facility.

• Annual endowment lectur in memory of late Sri. Gopalkishan Rao Vepachedu was instituted in 2002. An invited lecture will be given by an eminent academician or scientist every year.

• The Deparment hosted the prestigious 70^th Annual meeting of the Society of Biological Chemists(I) in December, 2001. More than 500 delegates (National & International) attended.Prof. C. Subramanyam was the Organizing  Secretary.

• The UGC-SAP at the level of DRS(Rs.45.5 lakhs)was sanctioned to the Department and Prof. P. Maruthi Mohan was appointed as coordinator.

• Mr.Raghuvir Singh, research scholar received the Best Poster Award at the 70^th Annual Meeting of SBC(I) Meeting.

• Ms. K. Rashmi was selected for the David Perkins Award by the Neurospora Policy Committee. For her research work, she received the award at the Neurospora-2002 Meeting held in California in March 13-17, 2002.

• Prof. P. Maruthi Mohan was elected as Fellow of the Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences on January 11, 2002.

• Prof. C. Subramanyam was nominated on the Program Advisory  Committee of the Plant Sciences section of the Department of Science & Technology.

• Five major research projects were awarded to the faculty members in the year 2001-2002.

6.  Employment Opportunities

• Three research scholars on completion of Ph.D. have left for Postdoctoral research in U.S.A. Two M.Sc. students have been employed by Virchows Limited. 

 7.  Institution and Industry

• Consultancy Research with the Central Power Research  Institute  is continuing in the second phase. Five different industries and institutions have sponsored students for Ph.D. research under the faculty. More than four minor consultancy projects have been completed.

8.  Future Plans / Activities  

Starting of the academic year (2002-2003), the department will serve as the nodal Department for running the M.Sc. Forensic Science Dr. B. Sashidhar Rao will be the Course Coordinator. The Department plans to start a one year P.G. Diploma in Clinical Biochemistry. Under the FIST program of the DST a new facility to initiate research in Proteomics and a Computer lab will be established. Under the UGC-SAP program new equipment and infrastructure will be added to strengthen research in the department. The department will be conducting a one-day National level symposium on the eve of superannuating of its senior faculty member in September, 2002. It is also planned to conduct a one day National symposium on Clinical Biochemistry to be sponsored by association of Clinical Biochemists , India. Research collaborations are being planed with industries and institutions both within and outside the country.
