Candidates who are admitted to Ph.D. course shall appear for and pass the Pre- Ph.D. test. However, those who possess an M.Phil. Degree in the subject concerned, or Ph.D. degree in an allied subject, will be exempted from this test. Such exemptions may be given by the Dean, on application and on the recommendation of the Research Committee of the Department.
The Pre- Ph.D. test shall be conducted for the admitted candidates after six months and before the completion of one year, from the date of admission. The Second test, if necessary, shall be held not later than three months after the declaration of the results of the first test.
The medium of examination for Pre- Ph.D. test shall be English for all subjects, except in the subjects where the official medium of instruction is other than English.
In case a candidate does not pass the Pre- Ph.D. test in the first two consecutive examinations, his/her Ph.D. registration shall stand cancelled.
Syllabus and the mode of Examination
The Pre- Ph.D. test consists of two papers, each of three hours duration and 100 marks.

Paper-II Broad Field of Research
Paper-I will be common to all candidates in the department whereas paper-II will be on broad area of research specialization. The Syllabus will be prepared by respective Boards of Studies and communicated to the candidates and the Controller of Examinations
