Jurisdiction NAWAB MIR OSMAN ALI KHAN was very much interested to
re frame the educational polices for the betterment of needy
person and to promote Education from root level to Higher
Education in all the faculties on par with the foreign countries
and decided the educate the person through Urdu Medium.
For the purpose, Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan (Asif Sabeh) has
pronounce the establishment of a Prospective Center of Education
with the Name Jamia-e-Osmania (Osmania University) in the year
In the same year the Dept. of Urdu came into existence with
intermediate course with the Head ship of Prof. Waheeduddin Saleem.
According to curriculum the same was further extend upto Degree
In the year 1923 a Post-Graduation course was started in Urdu
to fulfill further Higher Education. Mr. Mohiuddin Qaudri Zore,
Mohd Abdul Quader Sarvari and Syed Sajjad were treated to the
prominent teachers of Dept. of Urdu, O.U.
Knowing the fact and with the good faith the Nizam Govt has
send Mohiuddin Qaudri Zore and Syed Sajjad to London and Germany
respectively for the Research work in their respective field.

The Salient features of the Dept. are as follows:
- In 1940's, Research programme was started in the Department.
It was so happen that the feature in crow files when Prof. Rafia
Sultana, former Head Department of Urdu and Dean, Faculty of
Arts, was the first Lady in Osmania University and in the entire
Country to receive Ph.D Degree in Urdu from Osmania Univesity in
1957. The Department started the M.Phil course from 1976
- The Department has awarded 120 Ph.D. and about 110 M.Phil
Degree so far.
- Department organized annual "Inter-University Urdu Festival"
from 1954 through which the literary and cultural talents of the
students are encouraged.
- The Department was selected by the UGC for the special
Assistant Programme (SAP) for a period of five years to carry
out research on "Deccani Language and Literature".
- The Department use to Publish "QADEEM URDU" Annual Research
Journal from 1964 to 1986, and Annual Literary Journal "MUJALLA-E-OSMANIA"
from 1927 to 1991 and from 2004 onwards.
- Eminent literary personalities like Moulvi Abdul Haque
(Known as Baba-e-Urdu), Prof. Masood Hussian Khan (formar V.C.
Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi), Prof. Gulam Omer Khan, Dr.
Zeenath Sajida, Prof. Syeda Jaffar, Prof. Mughni Tabbassum,
Prof. Ashraf Rafi, Prof. Yousuf Sarmast, Prof. Akbar Ali Baigh,
Prof. Afzaluddin Iqbal, Prof. Gyas Mateen, Prof. Mohd. Baig
Ehsas, Dr. Aqeel Hashmi, Prof. Maimoona, and Prof. Fatima Begum
and served as Heads of the Department who served the Dept. for
the smooth functioning of the Dept.
- At present, Urdu as Language both 2nd and modern language is
being taught in more than 50 colleges, under the Jurisdiction of
Osmania University. The P.G. Center viz University College of
Arts & Social Social Science, O.U. Hyd, University College for
Women (Autonomous) Kothi, Hyd., Govt Degree College for Women's,
Hussaini Alam, Hyd., are offering Post Graduation in Urdu.
- Every year students who secure first rank in M.A. (URDU) are
awarded with "Rai Janaki Pershad" Memorial Gold Medal, "Hyder
Hasan" Gold Medal and U.P. Govt. Gold Medal.
