The Department of Islamic Studies was established in 1965. Dr. Hans Kruze, a German orientalist and Visiting Professor, was the first Head of the Department. It was strengthened during the successive tenures of Prof. Anwar Moazzam and Prof. M.Suleman Siddiqi as its heads.

The Department imparts basic knowledge about Islam and Muslim societies in different regions. It seeks to encourage interaction of different scholarly disciplines and to facilitate critical awareness of issues of religion and society promoting thereby good community relations and removing mutual distrust between members of a pluralistic society. Its postgraduate studies programme includes M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D.

Prof. Anwar Moazzam, former Head, was instrumental in preparing the Islamic Studies Syllabus for the Jamia Hamdard and the Kashmir University. Prof. M. Suleman Siddiqi, Former Head, Department of Islamic Studies has served as Principal, UCASS, Director Competitive Examinations Coaching Centre, and Director, Dairatul Maarif, Vice-Chancellor, O.U. He was also the former Registrar of Moulana Azad National Urdu University, and the Director of the Academic Audit Cell, as well as Dean, Faculty of Arts, O.U.

The Department has awarded 18 Ph.D. and 22 M.Phil. Degrees so far. It awards H.E.H. the Nizam’s Gold Medal every year to the top ranking student in M.A. (Islamic Studies).

The Department maintains a modest Seminar Library with about two thousand books in different languages. Recently a computer cell has also been established with a view to create a data bank and facilitate research on different aspects of Indian Muslims.
